prayer of confession
Leader: | The person whose sins are forgiven is connected with God and others. This person is full of peace. | Roll Play-doh into a ball. |
Let’s agree with God about the sin that so easily hides in us and makes us hide from God and one another; Then our hearts won’t be filled up with lies, but will have room for God’s grace. Let’s confess together: | Shape your Play-doh ball into a heart.
Everyone: | Great and merciful Father, we have walked away from you; We have done our way; we have not done God’s way. On our own, we can’t obey you. | With each line of the confession, break off a piece of Play-doh from the heart and spread them out in front of you on the table. |
When we try to hide from you, we feel heavy inside; We feel far away from God, from others, from ourselves. We don’t know what to do, | Look around at all the pieces of Play-doh on the table.
So we will tell God about our sin … | Young children might like to whisper their prayer into their hands and hold it up to God; quietly talk with another family member about their confession; or imagine it. Remind them that they don’t have to use words. God understands.
Leader: | O Lord, give us your mercy. Reconnect us with you, with others, and with ourselves. Forgive us for doing our own way and not your way. Father, you are the only place we can really hide. You are all around us, keeping us safe. You have rescued us from sin, Satan, and death. In the name of Jesus, our Savior, we pray. Amen. | Pick up all the Play-doh pieces and shape them back into a ball. |
Everyone: | God is faithful and fair. If we confess our sins, he will forgive our sins. He will forgive every wrong thing we have done. He will make us pure (1 John 1:9 NIrV). |
