Did you know there aren’t many hymns about God creating people? This is one of the few we could find!
One thing I love about these words is the reminder that we are created in God’s likeness, in his image, and he made us inventive, he made us creative, like him!
Every picture we draw, every skyscraper we build, is an act of worship that reflects the nature of our amazing Creator God!
Spend some time this week listening to this song and thinking about the ways God has made you to create: do you like to bake or cook? garden? draw or paint? make spreadsheets or reports? sculpt? build houses or legos? organize things? write or compose?
You are made as a good and beautiful image of the One True God. And what you create matters, no matter how small or large, because it’s worship. Praise God!
Lyrics
God, who stretched the spangled heavens, infinite in time and place,
flung the suns in burning radiance through the silent fields of space,
we, thy children, in thy likeness, share inventive powers with thee;
great Creator, still creating, teach us what we yet may be.
We have conquered worlds undreamed of since the childhood of our race,
known the ecstasy of winging through uncharted realms of space,
proved the secrets of the atom, yielding unimagined power,
facing us with life’s destruction or our most triumphant hour.
As thy new horizons beckon, Father, give us strength to be
children of creative purpose, serving man and honoring thee
’til our dreams are rich with meaning, each endeavor thy design;
great Creator, lead us onward ’til our work is one with thine.
